i feel like atheism is pretentious i think agnosticism is the way to go

This again?

Atheism and agnosticism are answers to two different questions:

  1. Do you believe in a god or gods? If yes: theist. If no: atheist.
  2. Does a god or god exist? If yes/no: gnostic. If maybe: agnostic.

You’ll find most atheists are agnostics. We also tend to be skeptics first. There is a particularly pretentious, pompous vocal minority who ruin it for the all of us.

Goddamn Toothbrush: Listen up, atheists

goddamntoothbrush:

petershorseman:

Can we talk about something that’s been bugging me recently?

If it pertains to atheism and isn’t some sort of judgmental diatribe against “militant atheists” or trotting out the same old tired arguments we’ve seen a thousand times over, go right ahead!

I am a Christian.  I have never started a war because I am a Christian.  I have never killed anyone because I am a Christian.  I have never hurt anyone because I am a Christian.  Before now, I have never even started an argument because I am a Christian, and I hope I never have to again.  While I wish more people shared my beliefs, I am quite content to let people believe what they want.

Says the self-professed Christian as he starts an argument. I wonder what it will be about. Will it be a theological discussion? An exploration of the concept of “burden of proof”? Perhaps a brand new argument for the existence of a supernatural entity?

However, many atheists (many, not all) seem to think that I, and all Christians, are the scum of the Earth.

Oh, you’re posting on the #atheism tag to chastise atheists (many, not all) (but you may as well address us all and hope we’ll forward your message to the bad apples who aren’t actually going to read your post). I can tell you now that this isn’t going to end well.

If you are trying to tell someone that their personal beliefs are wrong, you will not accomplish anything.  I am all for discussions, heated debates even, but if I am told that I am foolish for what I know to be true, I will not listen to you.

Then go away. If you are going to engage in any kind of discourse with atheists, you need to come to terms with the fact that we believe that you are mistaken in your beliefs. There is no way around this. If you’re incapable of having your beliefs questioned, deconstructed, and eviscerated, you need to leave. Now. If you cannot cope with the fact that many of us believe you have devoted yourself to something false, the discussion will go nowhere.

Another thing that has been bothering me is how these particular atheists focus only on Christians.

Which particular atheists? Why don’t you address them particularly instead of dumping on all of us? Could it be that most of the atheists you encounter come from predominantly Christian societies? Wouldn’t it follow, then, that they would focus primarily on that? Or are you just offended that we’re not focusing on bad/false religions and leaving your good/right one alone?

There are many religions in the world, and Christians are not the only ones to have started holy wars, or murder those who do not believe in their religion.

Well that makes the holy wars they’ve started and the murders they’ve committed more acceptable, then.

Wait….

If you’re going to stand up against someone’s religion, have the courage to stand up to all of them, or don’t do it at all.

What makes you think we don’t?

The greatest example of this type of person is Ricky Gervais. I am sick of seeing people praise him for insulting one group of people.

A belief system is not a group of people. Attacking beliefs is not attacking people. Eviscerating a belief is not eviscerating a person.

In my opinion, that is a horrible and sickening way of building one’s career.

So?

I fully realize that Christians have done horrible things in the past, and still do horrible things today.  But this is a very small percentage of a worldwide religion, and it’s silly to base your judgement on that.

And yet it’s hugely influential. Unless you’re saying I can buy alcohol on Sundays now, marry a dude, and purchase contraceptives without having to explain myself to my employer.

I can’t?

Guess I’ll keep fighting the good fight, then.

I completely respect your decision not to believe in God.

You clearly do not.

Stop insulting me for believing.

You poor, poor thing. I bet you even thing Christians in the US are routinely persecuted.

faithreasons:

I found this on an atheist site and was disappointed but not surprised at how little some people understand that which they then reject. There are a number of important misunderstandings of Christian teaching that are represented in this meme.
(1) Hell was not created for man.
It was a residence created for Satan and the other fallen angels after their rebellion against God. It was intended to be a place where God’s grace was not present. This means that it is a place where those in rebellion can live out their rebellion due to their own choice.

Pretty sure that was from Milton’s Paradise Lost and not, y’know, Christian scriptures. I could be mistaken.

(2) When humans choose to rebel against God through sin, there is a consequence of that rebellion in being separated from God.
If a human dies in that rebellion, the consequence is continued separation.

This assertion relies on the erroneous presumption that faith in God is the default. It is not. In order to rebel against God, one must first be loyal to God. If there is no reason to believe in God, there is no loyalty and, therefore, no rebellion.

(3) Hell is chosen separation from God and his mercy.
I like a creative discussion of Hell by C.S. Lewis in his “The Great Divorce” in which he describes Hell as a place of selfish self-alienation from God and others. This is an apt description of the self-imposed torment of Hell for those that live in rebellion against God. The flaw of this post, as we have seen, is that Hell is not God choosing people to suffer, but people choosing their own self-interest and reaping the consequences of their choice in a place not made for them, but none the less, is a place to which their rebellion leads them.

C.S. Lewis was a dreadful philosopher. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to believe in hell.

Part of the task of an Apologist is responding to false or misleading understandings of the faith that may impact whether one considers the claims of Xty as of worth. One, however, has no right to merely jettison difficult doctrine because others may not like it. If this is done, one is no longer defending the faith. He is merely abandoning it for a straw man that he can more easily support. That is why this is relevant to the apologetic task.

Ok. So, seeing as you’re an apologist, here’s my questions:
On what evidence should I accept your god - and only your god - as real?
If there were a universe in which no gods existed, how would it differ from ours?

gotta love when apologists take things like paridise lost and the inferno as canon

I can think of at least a dozen reasons why I wouldn’t want to rape and that’s without really even thinking about it too hard.  Hint: none of them have a damned thing to do with a god.

This quote rests on the ridiculous idea that refusal to worship your god is an attempt to diminish its glory. It’s not about your god. Your god probably isn’t real. It certainly isn’t important enough for me to behave as though it’s real.

Atheists Say

skepticalavenger:

testedspirit:

Atheists say creationism is not even a theory.

You obviously don’t understand what “theory” means. A theological theory is a well substantiated explanation of some aspect of the spiritual world, based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through observation and prayer. Amen.

So, you take the scientific definition of the word theory, adds some religious stuff to it, and pretends that this new “definition” has significance.  Sorry, reality doesn’t work that way.

Repeatedly “confirmed” through observation and prayer?  Sorry, “confirmation” is a term you can’t twist to fit here.  If prayer worked, it would be confirmed through the traditional methods of science.  Observation is only a part of that process.  Also included in confirmation is measurement, experimentation, and the formulation, testing, and modification of hypotheses, not to mention peer review.

Without the other steps, what you get is a bunch of people saying that they observed something miraculous (hallelujah, the Virgin Mary statue is crying) and not doing further checking to find out that either condensation has taken place or that someone has deliberately perpetrated a hoax.

Stages of Atheism (At least from my perspective)

skepticalavenger:

theskeptic28:

  • Questioning: Here is the scariest part of becoming an Atheist. Questions begin to form in the back of the mind. The problem is at first these questions are easily dismissed, but over time these questions get louder and louder.
  • Realization: It is probably one of the most reassuring and depressing stages of becoming an Atheist. The questions that grew in frequency and ferocity are no longer questions they become a realization. However, at this stage a person can feel depressed especially if they do not know anyone whom shares similar convictions about religion.
  • Rebellion: Probably the most empowering and emancipating stages of becoming an Atheist. Here people begin to rebel against the persona of a religious person around friends and family. Silence is no longer an option.
  • Maturity: The final stage? This is probably the final stage of atheism it is where one realizes there is very little they can accomplish by debating religious people or mocking religion. The person moves on and is completely secure in their new found freedoms.

Again, these are just my thoughts and even my own re-conversion back to atheism.

Sounds pretty accurate to me.  Any other comments?
